APA: The Easy Way! [Updated for APA 6th Edition] 2nd Edition Edition

Series: The Easy Way!Paperback: 60 pagesPublisher: XanEdu Publishing Inc; 2nd Edition edition (September 28, 2009)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0923568964ISBN-13: 978-0923568962 Product Dimensions: 8.3 x 5.3 x 0.2 inches Shipping Weight: 3.5 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #1,156 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #1 in Books > Textbooks > Medicine & Health Sciences > Research #4 in Books > Medical Books > Research #4 in Books > Medical Books > Psychology > Reference

I purchased this book as an afterthought, but after reading the first three of four pages, it bacame one of my best investments. Ms. Houghton takes the reader step by step in setting your computer up in APA Style, then the remainder of the book is a quick reference for some of the most frequently used information. It’s compact and now rides in my briefcase all of the time. I have several other learners at my workplace and they now have order copies as well.

No one can ever rationalize the logic in using APA style in areas other than the Psychological Sciences. Yet there we are, those of use whose studies have little or nothing to do with this area of study. In this regard the APA The Easy Way is a godsend. It takes the pain of dealing with the APA Manual, cuts through the BS and tells you the "meat" of what you really need to know to conform to this style of writing. It could definitely use some more sample papers. It would help to make comprehending the style easier if you could see it used is someone’s work. Additionally, it would help immensely if it quoted the page numbers in the actual APA Manual from where each area addressed was taken from. This would help just in case you are challenged to provide a specific reference from where you followed APA formatting. All-in-all a very simple and easy-to-use guide that helps take the sting out of writing APA style.

This is a great little book that summarizes the most important aspects of APA style. It is concise and easy to follow with just enough examples. I highly recommend you start here before buying the style guide which is more difficult to follow. If you do buy the style guide, get this book to work with and the larger more complicated books as a general reference. There are also many free online resources for APA style and some of them are excellent.

Well. I had to take 24 hours before I write this review bc I was so freaking ticked off. Jamie McGuire is a talented writer, no disputing that. And she had me with this book for probably the first 75%. I liked Falyn as a hero, even though she was a little prickly. The ‘I love you’ came faster than I anticipated and it made me think, ‘WOW, maybe this won’t be another angst-roller coaster that will drive me insane!’

Nope. Not so much. Enter the spoiler part of this review. What on EARTH just happened in this book? She took a hero, a guy you’d love to meet in real life, and absolutely destroyed any modicum of decency in him. Let me get this straight: the heroine can never have children, and even though Taylor says ‘ohhhh it’s fine, I love you, I only need you’, she quite wisely tells him to take some time to think about how he’ll feel about that. Good right? Someone making an emotionally smart decision for the future.

NOPE. NOT SO MUCH. On day four (of seven, mind you), the ‘hero’ gets wasted and sleeps with the first woman who pays attention to him. That was such an incredibly big no-no to me, but what made it a MILLION TIMES WORSE is that Falyn made it her fault too. I’m sorry, what? Did you force him to get into her pants? No, I don’t think so. And the punches keep coming. After the ridiculously easy road to forgiveness for Taylor (bc apparently your heroine is a doormat), the one night stand gets pregnant. OF COURSE SHE DOES. (Convenient plot device, anyone?

Street Smart

Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and the Fall of Cars Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Samuel I. Schwartz ID: B015F0BM7O

With wit and sharp insight, former Traffic Commissioner of New York City Sam Schwartz, a.k.a. “Gridlock Sam”, one of the most respected transportation engineers in the world and consummate insider in NYC political circles, uncovers how American cities became so beholden to cars. He also explains why the current shift away from that trend will forever alter America’s urban landscapes, marking nothing short of a revolution in how we get from place to place. When Sam Schwartz was growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, his block belonged to his community: the kids who played punchball and stickball and their parents, who’d regularly walked to the local businesses at which they also worked. He didn’t realize it then, but Bensonhurst was already more like a museum of a long-forgotten way-of-life than a picture of America’s future. Public transit traveled over and under city streets – New York’s first subway line opened in 1904 – but the streets themselves had been conquered by the internal combustion engine. America’s dependency on the automobile began with the 1908 introduction of Henry Ford’s car-for-everyone, the Model T. The “battle for right-of-way” in the 1920s saw the demise of streetcars and transformed America’s streets from a multiuse resource for socializing, commerce, and public mobility into exclusive arteries for private automobiles. The subsequent destruction of urban transit systems and the post-World War II suburbanization of America, enabled by the Interstate Highway System and the GI Bill, forever changed the way Americans commuted. But today, for the first time in history, and after a hundred years of steady increase, driving is in decline. Younger Americans increIDgly prefer active transportation choices like walking or cycling and taking public transit, ride-shares, or taxis. This isn’t a consequence of higher gas prices, or even the economic downturn, but rather a collective decision to be a lot less dependent on cars.

A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner.

The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses’ Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz’s magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer.

The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz’s work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC’s infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion — it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer.

“Always entertaining, occasionally hilarious, occasionally touching….Sound Americana.” (Saturday Review of Literature)

“Instructive, funny, and very readable.” (School Library Journal)

From the Publisher

No growing pains have ever been more hilarious than those suffered loudly by the riotous Gilbreth clan. First, there are a dozen red-haired, freckle-faced kids to contend with. Then there’s Dad, a famous efficiency expert who believes a family can be run just like a factory. And there’s Mother, his partner in everything except discipline. How they all survive such escapades as forgetting Frank, Jr., in a roadside restaurant or going on a first date with Dad in the backseat or having their tonsils removed en masse will keep you in stitches. You can be sure they’re not only cheaper, they’re funnier by the dozen.

I used to giggle over this book as a kid. It was a huge hit amongst my classmates, and we wore through several copies of Cheaper By the Dozen.
The Gilbreth family of 12 kids, parented by efficiency experts Lillian and Frank, were a bit eccentric and very funny. I still can remember the line one of the kids rapped out to a guest at dinner "Please, we are NOT in the mood for an organ recital." This was the standard reprimand for belching in the family and never intended for public airing.
The Gilbreths were actually serious innovators of efficiency for the new factory assembly lines, figuring out the number of movements needed to complete a task and establishing a unit of work movement called the Therblig. They were also warm, funny, loving parents and their story is a good one to read out loud to kids, who invariably love this book.

Has a story been so good that it made you laugh out loud? Well Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carry wrote an excellent biography of their childhood titled, "Cheaper by the Dozen." It is a very funny book. It is full of all the adventures the Gilbreth family went throgh in the first two decades of the 20th century.
Can you imagine having to take care of 12 kids and a dog? That would be a pretty hard job. I love reading this book especially when their father (Mr. Gilbreth) was teaching the kids Morse code. All over the house on every wall was Morse code. The kids had to find out what they said. Some would say, "Go to my room and under my bed is a deck of cards."
I encourage any one who loves non-fiction biography to read this book. I am sure you will like it too. If you don’t like it in the beginning you should stick with it because it gets extremely good at the end.

The first thing I have to say about this book is that it’s funny and will make the reader understand how a super large family really can make it financially.
I read this book the first time because it was required in junior high (now known as middle school). I just read it again with my teenage daughters to maybe bring some understanding to them about saving time and money and that time is money. This father is the king of creative spending and overlapping chores to save time.
A very enjoyable book to read. This is an excellent book to co-read with your children of any age and might help you get a few frugal points accross to them.
It’s a comical read laced with some very neccesary ideas of financial knowledge.
This is a quick book to read, and in my case a shared time of family financial understanding. Don’t pass up reading this fun book. It’ll make you laugh and think…"That’s a good idea." reading about dad’s fanatical penny pinching ways.
A great story that everyone should read.

WOW!!! Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! I have educated myself extensively on NPD, and THIS is the book I could not put down! If you are ‘under the spell’ of living with one with NPD, the first step is to become aware of WHAT it is you are dealing with, and then acknowledge that this disorder is so perplexing that perhaps you DO need help to cope with the NPD individual in your life. Please…Go ahead and do yourself a ‘life-altering favor’…do not hesitate to purchase this book! It will give you a complete array of tools that you need to reclaim your life, your values, your power, and your sanity. And if you have chosen to stay in this relationship, this "life experience" does not have to be a "life sentence" with ‘no parole’. You CAN reclaim your life! The information in this book is amazingly helpful, incredibly detailed, and the author has such an abundance of insight into the NPD personality. For the first time in many, many years (actually decades), I now feel alive, in control, and HAPPY again. I have actually reclaimed my life, my values, and my soul! This book is like a ‘breath of fresh air’ for those of us who have been suffocated and stifled for so long.

We DO have options, and this author takes you, by the hand (and with no holds barred) to show you exactly HOW you can begin the process to light up your future and enjoy life once again. The powerful arsenal of the narcissist has remained unchallenged for far too long; now finally a viable arsenal is available for the spouse, partner, adult child, employee, or co-worker of one with NPD, to enable you to reclaim your power! The results of putting even ‘some’ of the author’s ideas into practice – even after only three short days for me – have been both amazing and enlightening!
